In more than 100 mass settings and countless motets, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525–1594) raised the vocal polyphony of the High Renaissance to such artistic heights that the term “Palestrina style” became synonymous with an entire musical era shortly after his death. Celebrating 500 years since the composer’s birth, the Tallis Scholars and Peter Phillips—acclaimed interpreters of Palestrina’s music for several decades—perform three programs that present his works in a dialogue with those of his contemporaries Orlando di Lasso, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and Claudio Monteverdi.
