When Jörg Widmann took up his composition studies with Wolfgang Rihm in the late 1990s, the teacher quickly realized that his student was also a highly accomplished clarinetist. Rihm went on to write several works for Widmann over the following years. As part of his concert series featuring music history’s great clarinet quintets, Widmann is joined by Quartet Amabile to perform the Vier Studien of his late mentor, who passed away in 2024. In the concert’s first half, the Japanese ensemble presents Widmann’s Fourth and Beethoven’s Fifth String Quartets.
